ongoing · Post-and-Poll

Tim Bray has a brief article about syndication technolgies as an Internet scale messaging system. What he says is obvious, but it wasn’t obvious to me until he said it. :-)

One thought on why post-and-poll works, though its much lest efficient than store and forward….In a post-and-poll setup (thinking XML-based web services), only the two endpoints need to understand the protocols (at least, those above the transport). In a store-and-forward setup, the intermediaries (thinking email) need to understand the format. This means that post-and-poll can be very flexible and can grow “insanely-fast.”
