World’s First Technorati Intern

Update: Sorry to those who got the shaft from Spam Karma. I’ve turned it off now, so you should be able to add comments.

It’s official. I’m interning at Technorati this summer. Thanks to Tantek, Niall, Jonas and whoever else put in a good word for me (from the inside ;-) ).

And, in case anyone’s wondering, there’s absolutely no doubt that without this blog I wouldn’t have this opportunity. Here’s the formula:

  1. Write about something you care about.
  2. Try to write it well.
  3. Figure out who else cares about it.
  4. Get them to read your stuff.
  5. 5. Let everyone know you’re looking for work.
  6. ???
  7. Profit!

Though steps 6 and 7 are out of your control, but 1-5 are within the grasp of anyone with at least a bit of writing skills.

Update: Niall (via IRC) says I should encourage people to contribute to OSS projects, as well. To paraphrase, “don’t wait around for the corporate master to take notice, open up a text editor and hack.” Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Ryan, that’s great news. Congrats. In addition to changing backup tapes, I hope you get to do something cool with microformats, too!

I’d wondered if the secret news might be something of this sort. Congratulations! I’ll be interested in hearing what you get up to during your time there.

Congratulations on the internship! Where (geographical location) will you be working? Yeah so we both got extremely busy this term…I hope you have thoroughly enjoyed your time in SF, and I’m sure you have! We’ll have to catch up this summer and mull over the west coast experiences. Thanks again for coming to visit. Still sad that you missed Portland altogether though. I’ll be in Newport again for the marathon in a few weeks. Rogue trip afterwards for sure. When will you be in KC this summer?

Cari- Technorati’s in downtown SF, so I’ll be in the city all summer. You’ll have to come visit before you move back to OK. And I’ll be in KC the first weekend of June.

    Aaron- yeah.

    Congrats, Ryan, well done. :-)
