Second Class

So, last night I went to the first session of the second course I’m taking. This one’s on Computer Security, a topic that I really know nothing about, but that I feel I should know well.

To be honest, the class scares me. Here’s the first line of the syllabus:

This is a difficult, time-consuming course.

Ok, I knew that grad school was going to be a challenge, but when a Eastern European[1] with advanced degrees is telling me that is something is going to be hard, I’m inclined to believe him.

I think he’s Eastern European based on his accent, but I may be wrong. I can’t seem to find his bio or credentials online anywhere

“[W]hen a Eastern European … is telling me that is something is going to be hard, I’m inclined to believe him.” Dude, you are *so* right. American students have a drastically under-informed view of how easy their lives are and how wealthy they are compared to the rest of the world (and human history, for that). I’m willing to bet your prof personally has seen or experienced *real* privation, hardship, and suffering.

Now, where did I put my Fourbucks double-shot latte whip?

I definitely agree. That’s part of why I’m in grad school now, is because I felt like my undergrad was too easy- I was never really challenged (except with having the discipline to get busy-work done).

Then how come you’re all in an American school?…

I don’t think anyone’s saying that eastern europen school are better than American. They may be tougher, but there aren’t really any that teach Internet Engineering. :-)
