GRE scores

I just talked to my brother on the phone and my GRE scores arrived at the house today. I already knew what I got on the two objective sections, because they were computer scored. I got a 640 in the verbal reasoning section and a 640 in the Quantitative. What I didn’t know were the percentile scores. Those two scores correspond to the 90th and 66th percentiles. I was a little surprised by the fact that I did better in the verbal than the quantitative, I would think that being good at Computer Science and it being closely related to Math would mean that I would be better at the quantitative side of things. However, when I think about it more critically, it shouldn’t surprise me…

Computer science requires similar reasoning skills to math, but the subject matter is quit different. We must solve problems and many times the solutions require the manipulation of numbers, but the solutions are not primarily numerical. They are primarily verbal. I don’t mean the solutions are primarily spoken, but that they are written in a language with proper syntax and grammar, like any human language.

A piece of information I gained from Andrew(my brother) was the third score on my test. This score was for the written essay portion of the test. I scored a 5.5 out of 8 on that section and I think Andrew said I was in the 90’s percentile wise.

I’m happy.
